Equipment

  • 1 blender

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops mint chocolate chip ice cream keto (or high-protein). If using a regular ice cream, reduce the amount of sugar or don't add sugar at all to your shake
  • 2 scoops whey protein powder I used sugar-free whey isolate protein powder, about 30 g
  • cup unsweetened coconut milk You can use any plant-based milk of your choice.
  • sweetener to taste It depends on which sugar substitute you enjoy. I used stevia in the raw and a hint of honey. If your ice cream is loaded with sugar you may not need to sweeten your shake.
  • 8 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 drop of mint extract Although I added fresh mint leaves, they won't flavor the shamrock shake as much as peppermint extract. But go easy here! One or two drops are more than enough!
  • ½ cup avocado You won't taste it at all! It is only for adding extra creaminess to our protein shake. If you prefer replace it with a banana. The fruit must be preferably frozen. But you can use fresh fruit and add some ice cubes. For a shake with a vibrant green color, add about ⅓ cup of fresh baby spinach (you won't taste them, I promise!), or green food coloring.
  • ½ tablespoon dark chocolate chips optional (Use mini chocolate chips or chop the regular-size ones to add a crunch to your shake. You may add them to the blender or mix them after blending the shamrock protein shake. I prefer not blending them with the other ingredients because they can make your shake pale green, with a greyish tone).

Instructions

  • In a blender, combine all the ingredients, except the chocolate chips. Blend well until creamy and smoothie.
  • Then, stir in the chocolate chips, only if using them.  You may top your shake with coconut whipped cream and a sprinkle of more chocolate chips. Enjoy it right away and celebrate St. Patrick's Day!

Recipe Notes

How to Store
This Protein Shamrock Shake is best consumed right away.
  • Fridge: You can store leftovers in a Mason jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
  • Freezer: If you would like to prepare yours much ahead and freeze it, omit the fruit from the recipe so it won't get brown. To freeze it, add the blended protein shake to an ice cube tray, let it freeze for a couple of hours, and then cover it with plastic wrap and aluminum foil. It will keep well for about 2 months!
