Crème Brûlée Yogurt Toast (Viral TikTok Recipe)

    Jump to Recipe ↓

Yogurt Toast is a viral TikTok recipe that consists of either air-fried or baked custard yogurt on a toast. There are many variations and ours is like having a quick Crème Brûlée on a toast. It is addicting!

three yogurt toasts in a tray, one was taken a bite

TikTok is known for its many trendy recipes… the most recent is the famous custard yogurt toast.

We had to place our own spin on it. The result? It tastes like you’re having a dessert (or at least Crème Brûlée on a toast)!

You can make and serve yogurt toast for breakfast (with yogurt and fresh fruit), a quick lunch (savory), or for dessert like ours.

You can customize your own according to your taste and the time of the day you want to serve it.

But all of them are quick and easy to make using ingredients you probably have at home.

And if you are thinking it is a freaky idea, well think twice! Why? Because:

    1. It tastes quite delish! I ain’t kidding, folks! And no… It is NOT ‘eggy’!
    2. It is not much different from the classic French toast. See below the similarities and differences between French toast and yogurt toast.

    French Toast vs. Yogurt Toast

They use almost the same ingredients: bread slices, dairy (milk or yogurt), eggs, a sweetener (e.g. sugar), and sometimes a flavoring ingredient such as vanilla extract.

The only difference between them is:

    1. For making French toast, you dip the slices of bread in a custardy liquid (made with milk, eggs, and sugar) and either bake or pan-fry it.
    2. For making yogurt toast, you top the sliced bread with a custard (made with yogurt, egg yolks, and sugar) and either air fry or bake them.

See? They follow the same principles although they’re executed in different ways!

    Ingredients and Substitutions

Make our crème Brulee yogurt toast with just 5 ingredients:

    • Sliced bread: The best type of bread is thick-sliced, soft bread such as brioche and Texas toast. Why? Because you’ll need to spoon down the soft part of the bread that is surrounded by the crust in order to top it with the custard. It would be hard if the slice of bread is thin or hard. But if you prefer sourdough bread, whole wheat or white bread, or whole-grain bread go ahead!
    • Egg yolks: Although some recipes call for whole eggs, egg yolks work best for this type of custard because they make for richer, creamier custards instead of the firm, jellyish consistency obtained with whole eggs. Whole eggs are better for a cheesecake, for example, because they make that baked custard firm enough to un-mold.
    • Greek yogurt: For a richer custard, use full-fat Greek yogurt. But it’ll still work with reduced-fat yogurt. For this crème Brulee, either vanilla or plain Greek yogurt is better. But if you are making a breakfast yogurt toast, for example, you may use flavored yogurt such as strawberry.
    • Sweetener: We used sugar for obvious reasons (both to sweeten the custard and also to caramelize the top with a torch), but you can use agave syrup, honey, or maple syrup to sweeten the yogurt custard mixture only. However, if you are making a savory yogurt toast, skip the sugar and use salt to taste plus ground black pepper and spices of choice.
    • Flavoring: Vanilla bean was my choice (find out how to scrape the seeds) but vanilla bean paste or even vanilla extract will work for this yogurt toast recipe too! If making another type of toast, cinnamon, nutmeg, all-spice, apple or pumpkin pie spice, orange zest are some of many options.

Toppings to Add on Custard Toast

For our crème brûlée custard yogurt toast, sugar is enough although you can garnish it with fresh berries as well.

But depending on the type of yogurt toast you are making, choose the one(s) that best pair with your toast. Here are a few ideas:

For breakfast or dessert yogurt toast:

    • Raspberries
    • Blueberries
    • Strawberries
    • Blackberries or other fresh berries
    • Dark chocolate
    • White chocolate
    • Nectarines
    • Peaches
    • Apricots
    • Powdered sugar
    • Granola
    • A drizzle of honey or maple syrup
    • A drizzle of melted peanut butter or Nutella
    • Chocolate chips
    • Chopped nuts

For savory yogurt toast to serve as a quick lunch:

    • Chimichurri sauce
    • Pesto
    • Red pesto sauce
    • Caponata
    • Tapenade
    • Pico de gallo
    • Crumbly cheeses such as feta and goat cheese
    • Herbs (dried or fresh)
    • Sliced avocado
    • Grated hard-boiled eggs

How to Make Yogurt Toast in the Oven

Make this baked yogurt toast in just 12-15 minutes as follows:

    1. Preheat oven at 350°F (180° C).
    2. Make the custard mixture: In a small bowl, add Greek yogurt, egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla bean. Whisk very well until homogeneous and creamy.
    3. Prepare the bread: Using your fingers or the back of a spoon, press down the center of the bread to indent and create a well without cutting through. Spoon in the custard mixture into the indented well.
    4. Bake: Bake on the middle rack for about 12-15 minutes or until the custard is mostly set.
    5. Serve: Distribute about ½ to 1 tablespoon of sugar over the custard and caramelize the sugar using a torch. Garnish it with fresh berries if you want. Serve immediately!

How to Make Yogurt Toast in the Air Fryer

    1. Preheat your air fryer at 350°F (180° C).
    2. Follow steps 2 and 3 above to make the custard and prepare the bread.
    3. Place the toasts into the air fryer basket and cook for about 4-8 minutes. Make sure to keep a space between them so the hot air can circulate.
    4. Follow step 5 above for serving.

Tips for Making Custard Yogurt Toast

    • The softer and thicker the slice of bread, the better as it will be easier to indent a well into the center without cutting through, but you can really use any bread you like.
    • The custard mixture can make between 2 - 3 slices of yogurt toast. It will depend on the size and thickness of the slices of bread. I’ve used 2 quite thick bread slices, and still had some custard mixture leftover!
    • Make sure to whisk the custard mixture well so that it resembles a cream, smooth custard texture. Make sure there are no egg clumps!
    • Only remove the Greek yogurt from the fridge when it is time to prepare the custard. Do not let it sit outside the fridge; otherwise, the custard will be too runny.
    • Watch the cooking time, as ovens and air fryers have different strengths. The custard will be ready when set and starting to caramelize on the edges.
    • Distribute the sugar over the custard to form a thin layer; otherwise, it will burn before all the sugar gets caramelized or bruléed.

What type of bread should I use to make yogurt toast?

I found Texas toast and brioche to be the best ones! Because they are thick and soft. The softer and thicker the slice of bread, the better as it will be easier to indent a well into the center without cutting through.

Should I use whole eggs or egg yolks?

Some recipes for TikTok custard toast call for whole eggs. But egg yolks work is the best for this type of custard because they make for richer, creamier custards.

Whole eggs make firm, jellyish custards because of the protein coagulation of the whites. Whole eggs are better for cheesecakes though because they make it firm enough to un-mold.

Does yogurt taste good on toast?

Yes, Greek yogurt on toast tastes good! Yogurt is a type of dairy. As milk, half-and-half, and heavy cream, it can be used to make many recipes such as chocolate bread pudding and also to make quick bread, yogurt cakes, baked oats, and even this no yeast pizza dough and no yeast naan.
