    • Quick + Easy: Our recipe calls for a few ingredients that you can find in your local grocery store and you can make it in 10 minutes. 
    • Versatile: You can easily replace one or more ingredients to make a different version every time. In addition, you can serve it for lunch, dinner, or as a snack. 
    • Budget-friendly: Except for the burrata, all the other ingredients are low-cost. However, you can replace the burrata with fresh mozzarella, ricotta, or cottage cheese which cost less. 
    • Healthy: It calls mostly for fresh ingredients, is high-protein, and has a low glycemic index which is diabetes-friendly.  For a low-carb toast, use keto or low-carb bread.

    What Is Burrata?

    Technically, burrata, a product of Southern Italy, is not an Italian cow's milk cheese. It's rather a shell of mozzarella that encases a mixture of cheese curds and cream, forming one malleable ball.

    Yes, its exterior resembles a large ball of fresh mozzarella, but once you tear it open you'll find a filling of Stracciatella (curds) and cream.

    Burrata has a rich buttery flavor and can be served on toast, a meat and cheese board, as an appetizer, and on top of pasta or salads.

    How is burrata different from mozzarella?

    Unlike mozzarella, burrata is not cheese -- although it looks like cheese! Burrata has a mozzarella shell filled with soft cheese curds and cream. 

    As for texture, burrata is much softer and creamier than fresh mozzarella. It has multiple textures (the firmer outer pouch and the creamy, spreadable inside).

    Ingredients and Substitutions

    To make this burrata toast recipe, you'll need the following:

    • 2 slices sourdough bread, any hard-crusted bread of your choice, or even Italian bread (For a low-carb toast, use keto or low-carb bread. You can use any leftover bread to make this sourdough bread pudding).
    • Extra virgin olive oil to toast the bread, plus more for drizzling the top
    • 6 tablespoon chimichurri sauce (homemade or store-bought), about 3 tablespoon per toast (or replace it with another sauce of your choice such as Italian pesto)
    • 1 large Heirloom Tomato, thinly cut into 6 slices (or another type of tomato)
    • 2 burrata pouches (one per toast) -- Although it is not the same, fresh mozzarella is a suitable substitute!
    • Freshly ground black pepper, for seasoning the top
    • Red pepper flakes, for seasoning the top
    • Fresh herbs (fresh basil leaves, oregano, or thyme)
    • A pinch of flaky sea salt (optional), or kosher salt

    Equipment

    To prepare this sourdough bread toast with tomato and burrata, you will need the following:

    • Griddle
    • Cutting board
    • Serrate knife

    How to make burrata toast

    1. Heat a griddle or large cast-iron skillet over medium heat, place the sourdough bread slices onto it, and lightly drizzle with olive oil on both sides. Let it toast for 2-3 minutes per side, or until crispy and golden brown.

    2. Transfer your toasted crusty bread slices to a plate. Spoon the chimichurri on top and spread it evenly.

    3. Top each toast with 3 slices of tomato!

    4. Place one pouch of burrata on top. Make sure to tear open the burrata pouch to spread it out over the tomato slices.

    5. Drizzle the top of the burrata with EVOO and season with pepper and red pepper flakes plus fresh herbs  (plus flaky salt). Enjoy!

    Burrata substitutes

    If you are not a fan of burrata or don't find it in your local grocery store, you can replace it with a creamy cheese such as the following:

    • Full-fat ricotta
    • Full-fat cottage cheese
    • Fresh mozzarella
    • Mascarpone
    • Spreadable goat's cheese
    • Melted raclette or double cream brie

    NOTE: Ricotta and cottage cheeses are more affordable and easier to find pretty much anywhere. As for raclette or double cream brie, although they present a creamy texture, they don't have the mild flavor of burrata. 

    Tomato Burrata Toast Variations

    If you are not a fan of spicy foods, skip the red pepper flakes. 

    You can use pesto sauce or mash avocado instead of chimichurri on your burrata tomato toast. 

    For a sweet version, skip the chimichurri and tomato and replace them with grilled peaches or mixed berries, a drizzle of honey or balsamic reduction, and toasted pinenuts.   

    How to serve burrata

    • Serve it at room temperature (Take it out of the fridge, about 30 minutes before serving so you can fully taste the flavors of burrata).
    • Enjoy it fresh (As soon as you buy it and cut it open; otherwise, it will go sour!)
    • Season simply so you can enjoy its fresh, tangy flavors! 
    • Add it fresh to toast, pizza, flatbreads, pasta, and salads.
    • It pairs well with anything Caprese such as this Caprese pasta salad.

    FAQ'S

    What is the best bread to make toast? 

    Denser, moister bread such as sourdough, ciabatta, whole-grain, baguette, or semolina bread makes the perfect toast. However, any bread has the potential to toast well if neither sliced too thin nor too thick. For the perfect toast, slice your bread about 14mm thick, turning the outside crispy and crunchy. In addition, old bread not only makes good bread pudding but also makes a good toast!

    I burned my sourdough toast! What do I do now?

    If your sourdough bread toast was LIGHTLY burned, simply scrape the burned area using a serrate knife and then throw those burnt crumbs in the trash. The underneath surface will look fine, like a regular toast! 

    However, if your toast looks like that came out of a furnace, it is much better to throw it away and toast a new slice of bread. Otherwise, it will have an unbearable bitter flavor. It will ruin your meal!  

    Is this an Italian toast?

    Our burrata toast can be considered a contemporary Italian meal because the recipe calls for most Italian cuisine ingredients, except for the chimichurri sauce which is known as a South American pesto with some Italian influence.

    How long will burrata keep in the fridge?

    Once you open the burrata container, make sure to keep it in the water and use the burrata balls within 2-4 days to prevent them from spoiling.

    How to store burrata toast

    If you're planning to make your burrata toast ahead, toast the bread up to 30 minutes before serving. If it sits too long, it will become stale and hard instead of firm and crispy as a toast should be! Moreover, only place the topping right before serving; otherwise, your toast will become soggy! 

    Only make enough to eat right away!
